Thanks for the ideas you have provided in I Would Join a Donut Community The Engaged Consumer. Yet another thing I would like to state is that pc memory specifications generally increase along with other advancements in the technology. For instance, whenever new generations of cpus are brought to the market, there is usually a similar increase in the shape preferences of both the computer memory plus hard drive space. This is because the software operated simply by these cpus will inevitably surge in power to make use of the new technological know-how.

I have seen loads of useful things on your web-site I Would Join a Donut Community The Engaged Consumer about computer systems. However, I have got the view that notebook computers are still less than powerful more than enough to be a good choice if you typically do jobs that require loads of power, such as video touch-ups. But for website surfing, statement processing, and quite a few other popular computer functions they are all right, provided you never mind the tiny screen size. Many thanks for sharing your notions.

Great post Doug! I love the thought process you've laid out. I completely agree that for many commodity (or dare I say boring) brands the community has to be more about a related idea than the product/brand itself. Josh Bernoff (Forrester) recently wrote a good piece entitled "Social Technology Strategies for Boring Consumer Brands (Forrester subscribers can read the full article here: http://www.forrester.com/Research/Document/0,7211,54044,00.html). One example he mentions is how Liberty Mutual ("boring" insurance company) created a successful community focused on moral responsibility. And of course he mentions the ever-popular example of the BeingGirl.com site (Proctor and Gamble) that serves as a learning community for adolescent girls and at the same time strategically advertises P&G's line of "boring" feminine care products. Anyways, good stuff.

"Dohhh-nuts..." [quote from Homer Simpson of 'The Simpsons.]

On a serious note, you bring up an excellent point here, Doug. One that many brands are grappling with. Peter Kim and I gave a little point/counterpoint recently in a recent MarketingProfs article that talked about the "build vs. join" debate [http://budurl.com/8bgt]. My theory is that all brands should have their own community while Peter advocated that some should build and most should join.

My rationale behind my recommendation was that as you've illustrated above, any brand can ratchet their focus to one that is more lifestyle oriented vs. product specific. The benefit is that they control the content and conversation and ultimately have a much better ability to measure their efforts. If done correctly, this will help a brand as it reaches out into the bigger fishing holes (hello Facebook).

It's why in my "Would you Join a Toothpaste Community" post, I didn't really expect that anyone WOULD join a toothpaste community. But they might consider one on kid's oral health. Or tips and tricks on whitening your smile. To that end, you've done a nice job expounding on this conversation and I look forward to more internal (and external) dialog over the coming weeks and months!

Best,
